Number of Tourists to Madhya Pradesh Doubles in Four Years

Current Tourism Scenario in the State

Number of tourists coming to Madhya Pradesh has increased by twice the numbers since the previous four years. The state tourism department mentioned that domestic tourists formed a large part of the incoming visitors who come to the state.

Madhya Pradesh witnessed more than two crore tourists in the year 2008, which increased two folds to a number of four crore in 2011 as per a report by the government. The visitors to the state also included religious, foreign and domestic tourists.

What the Tourism Ministry has to say

A new logo for the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board that is a striking tiger was introduced and is aimed at showcasing the royal animal in the state. This took place at a state press conference attended by the Tourism Minister Yoshodhara Raje Scindia. She also mentioned that ‘‘The Narmada is our greatest asset. It flows through the breadth of the state, and just like you have the Palace on Wheels in Rajasthan, we should have a Narmada on Wheels in MP’’.

However, she also voiced concerns about the state such as air connectivity. Mrs. Scindia also stressed on the potential of eco-tourism and heritage tourism in the state.

The Popular Tourist Spots

The most favorite spots for tourists coming to the state are Orchha, which is located in the Tikamgarh district and the popular hill station, Panchmarhi. In the year 2011 more than 29 lakh tourists visited Orchha, which is a larger number when compared to the total number of tourists visiting other cities in the state. Panchmari featured as the second most visited spot, with over 9 lakh tourists visiting it.

Over one crore tourists visited Bhedhaghat and Maihar. Bhedhaghat is a waterfall that is located exactly where the rivers Bavan and Narmada meet; this is also the place where sage Bhrigu spent numerous years in deep meditation. Maihar is a temple dedicated to Goddess Sharda, who is an incarnation of Goddess Durga.

The state tourism department is currently emphasizing on domestic travelers rather than international ones.
