The people of eastern India, especially people of Odisha, during the month of March/April celebrate a day as Ashok Ashtami, which is a very important yearly festival in India. This festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and goddess Shakti. People from across the state and from Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh come together to seek their deities’ blessings and also to offer prayer.

Ashok Ashtami is one of the most important and celebrated festivals for Hindus in India and people from eastern part of India consider it to be one of their biggest festivals. It is celebrated every year in Odisha on the eighth day of the Chaitra month, which falls in March and April. The venue for this festival is Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. This festival is celebrated to worship Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva.

Legend has it that Lord Rama was unable to kill Ravana even after many battles. But with the blessings of Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva, Lord Ram killed Ravana and so to celebrate his victory over evil, a procession of Shiva and Shakti in a chariot was carried out by Lord Rama on the Ashtami day. So, till date, people carry out a huge procession in the form of Ratha Jatra in Bhubaneshwar. Ashok Ashtami is also known as Chaitra Durgashtami or Vasant Navratri.


Ashok Ashtami is one of the most important festivals celebrated in Odisha and devotees from Odisha and neighboring eastern part of India come to offer prayer to Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti. This festival attracts thousands of devotees from these places in India. Huge celebration is held in the Lingaraj Temple of Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, and a Rath Yatra is carried out during this festival.

Every year during the festival of Ashok Ashtami, an Ashok Ashtami Fair is carried out at Unakoti Tirtha of Kailashahar Sub-Division in Tripura. This is a major tourist attraction and pilgrims from all over the state as well as India visit this fair.
