Visit to Matheran

by Madhav Srinivasan 5 year, 6 months ago

Matheran is an isolated hill station situated in the Sahyadri hill range in the Rajgad district of Maharashtra. Located at a height of 803.47 meters above sea level, it is a haven for weary tourists who wish to escape from the humid and busy city life.

The highlight of this picturesque hill station lies in the fact that vehicles are banned inside the town. It is the only place in India where such a rule is enforced. To travel from one place to another, one can go on horseback or on rickshaws which are hand pulled. This ensures that there is no pollution due to automobiles. This adds to the serene nature of this quaint town.

Best Time to Visit Matheran

The perfect time to visit this enchanting hill station is between the months of October and May, right towards the end of Monsoon. You can bask in the scenic beauty of the valleys which are engulfed in mist, lush greenery and cascading waterfalls during this period.

Places to Visit in Matheran

There are a variety of beautiful sights in Matheran. Some of the major attractions include:

  • Panorama Point: This point offers a scenic view of the mighty hills on the left and Ulhas River on the right. Also known as ‘Sunrise Point’, it offers a brilliant view during the morning.
  • Heart Point: One can have a picturesque view of the valley below, from the Heart Point. The point is in the shape of a heart, and hence the name.
  • Monkey Point: Monkeys are the major attraction here. You must be careful of the Matheran macaque monkeys who are known to snatch food and belongings from the visitors.
  •  Apart from the above, there are a large number of attractive tourist spots such as Malang point, Honeymoon Point, Luisa Point, Charlotte Lake, Echo Point, Lords Point, One tree hill, Garbut Point, Olympia ( which is a race course), Artist Point, Khandala Point, Alexander Point, Mount Barry, Chowk Point, Little Chowk Point and Sunset Point.

Living the Toy Train Experience at Matheran

The Matheran Toy Train service started in 1907, after three years of construction. It has great historical significance and is one of the four historic toy train services in India. The train follows a zigzag route uphill from Neral to Matheran, covering the distance in about two hours. The scenery is mind-blowing and consists of hills lined with trees and lush green slopes.

Refreshments and snacks can be purchased from vendors who hop on and off the train or at the secluded stations where the train stops. The train goes through a tunnel known as the ‘One Kiss Tunnel’. The trains can seat around hundred people and four toy trains traverse this route.

How to get there?

The Neral Junction Station is located at the foot of the hill station and it is well-connected from Pune and Mumbai. From this station, the toy train can be boarded to reach Matheran. If you wish to travel by road, you can take the Mumbai-Pune highway and reach the Chowk Village. On reaching Chowk village, take a turn to Karjat road which will take you straight to Dasturi Naka. From this point onwards, automobiles are not allowed. You can hire horses, a rickshaw or trek up to Matheran.
