Trek to the Nanda Devi Rajjat Yatra

Nanda Devi Rajjat Yatra is a grand celebration in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand.The procession is held once in 12 years and is popular for its cultural vibrancy.

The Nanda Devi Rajjat Yatra is scheduled to be held in mid 2013. This three-week long festival starts from the Chamoli district and sees participation from pilgrims from all over the Garhwal and Kumaon region.  Hosted in the honor of the presiding deity Nanda Devi, the yatra is held once in 12 years.

Whoever has been a part of this event will agree that the rituals represent the real culture of the state and is best enjoyed on Uttaranchal tours. The procession starts from the Nauti village near Karnprayag and goes up till the elevated heights of Roopkund, with a four horned ram, which is believed to be take birth once in 12 years. According to the rituals, upon reaching the required height, a holy yagya is performed after which the sheep is decorated with ornaments, food and clothing and is then freed to go into the glacier. When the sheep with four horns is reborn the Nanda Devi Jat Yatra is planned.  The procession passes through various villages and halts at Koti, where the worships and celebrations go on for the whole night. Dance, music and various other rituals like the collecting of Brahmakamal are significant part of the celebrations.
