The Nanda Devi Rajjat Yatra is scheduled to be held in mid
2013. This three-week long festival starts from the Chamoli district and sees
participation from pilgrims from all over the Garhwal and Kumaon region. Hosted in the honor of the presiding deity
Nanda Devi, the yatra is held once in 12 years.
Whoever has been a part of this event will agree that the
rituals represent the real culture of the state and is best enjoyed on Uttaranchal tours. The procession starts from the
Nauti village near Karnprayag and goes up till the elevated heights of Roopkund,
with a four horned ram, which is believed to be take birth once in 12 years.
According to the rituals, upon reaching the required height, a holy yagya is
performed after which the sheep is decorated with ornaments, food and clothing
and is then freed to go into the glacier. When the sheep with four horns is
reborn the Nanda Devi Jat Yatra is planned.
The procession passes through various villages and halts at Koti, where
the worships and celebrations go on for the whole night. Dance, music and
various other rituals like the collecting of Brahmakamal are significant part
of the celebrations.
The yatra is a very tough indulgence which requires trekking
across some of the most challenging routes but the exotic locations and breath
taking views which you will find atop is worth the pain. This is a good time to
explore the local culture of the region as well. You can plan your North India holiday tours during this festival.
This unique cultural feast which has, till date, remained
under covers has caught the attention of the Uttrakhand government which has
decided to widely publicize this event to attract more and more tourists to the
state. As per the chief minister of the state, the government is aiming to
create the buzz of this event on the national as well as international platform
to invite more and more tourists. The government also has established a
development committee dedicated to ensure that the event is a grand success. One can reach this region by taking up Shimla tour packages.
Tourists should not miss this year’s event as many steps are
being taken to make the experience enjoyable and hassle free for the tourists. To
assist the yatris, the chief minister also plans to set up a cell at his office
which will allow him to personally monitor the preparations of this yatra. In
addition to this, a trial too, will be conducted to review the route
arrangements. With the success of this event, the government is looking to
create a niche for itself on the international map.
This is a perfect opportunity for those interested in
cultural activities and have a weak knee for trekking. Traditional food, deep
interiors and non-tourist places (which are otherwise impossible to reach) are
a few highlights of taking up this holiday tours in India.
