Skiing in Uttaranchal - Enjoy the Snow

Auli - Auli is the one of the hottest destination in Uttaranchal to enjoy ice skiing. The beautiful snow covered peaks of the Nanda Devi (7817 mts), Kamet (7756 mts) and Dunagiri (7066 mts) are ideal to enjoy this sports. Often tagged as ‘Switzerland of the East’, Auli is indeed the most exotic hill resort in India. The green of oak trees and coniferous forests against the superbly white snow not only presents a scenic picture but also control the high velocity of air flow in the region.  The GMVN department of Uttaranchal government has taken many steps in order to make this resort a world class ski resort.

Auli is also known for hosting various international skiing festivals. The only way to reach the peak is through a cable car ride, which too is an added attraction as it offers commanding views of the peaks. The cable car ride is 4 kms long rope way and its operation began only in 1994. Having 10 towers and 2 cabins, each accommodating 25 people, this cable car ride connects Auli and Joshimath. The cost of the cable car ride is Rs 400 per person.

Dayara Bugyal - This is the next most popular skiing slope in Uttaranchal. Located at a very unexplored location, a stay here is sure to delight you with the beautiful ambiance away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The place is located near around 28 kms from Uttarakashi and at a height of more than 10,000 feet above sea level.
To reach here, adventurers need to undertake an 8 km long trek after getting down at Barsu, as it is the only way to reach the place. Other route that one can take is via Raithal village (10 kms from Bhatwari) from where tourists need to trek for 6 kms to reach the spot.

Munisiyari - Munsiyari is around 120 kms from Pittorgarh and offers Khalia top and Betulidhar as the main areas for skiing. Other attractions here includes trekking to the Birthi falls (19 kms), hot water spring at Madkot (22 kms) and various flora and fauna attractions. The town has a tourist rest house where skiers can sojourn.

Mundali - Located at a distance of 129 kms from Dehradun and is known for offering various other attractions besides skiing. The only drawback of skiing is this place is that one needs to carry their own equipments and no instructors are available.

Learn to Ski

There are many skiing courses offers in Uttaranchal that tourists can undertake to enjoy the absolute thrill of the sport. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam offers 7-days and 14-days certificate courses in Skiing. Instructors too are available and charge Rs 500 for the equipments on hire. They charge Rs 3,710 for Indians and Rs 5,890 for foreigners (7 day course) and Rs 9,440 for Indians and Rs 11,800 for foreigners (14 day course). Also note that the rate for Indian couples are same as for one foreigner. They also provide accommodation and food facilities.

Another popular ski course providers is Cliff Top Club Resort at Auli (Phone :01389-223217). Tariff is Rs, 3800 to 8,000.

Skiing Gear

The gears for skiing can be conveniently hired from the various resorts that conduct courses in skiing. The things that tourist require to carry before skiing are heavy woollen clothing, like, caps, socks, gloves, mufflers, pullovers, trousers, wind proof jackets, dark glasses, gum/snow boots and torch. These equipments can be hired from the GMVN at Auli. The charges are - Rs 475 for adults and Rs 250 for children. The charges for lessons for kids are Rs 125 - 175 for a half day and full day indulgence, respectively. Goggles can be hired at Rs 100, while gloves charge is Rs 175.
