Golf Course – A Golfer’s Paradise
Naldehra, a hill station situated at a height of 2044 meters above
sea level, is home to the oldest golf course in India, and it is one of the
highest in the world. This golf course was the brain child of the British
Viceroy Lord Curzon. He was enchanted by this tiny little town with its rolling
hills and verdant slopes. He decided that it was the perfect place for a golf
course, and an entire hilltop was leveled to lay out the 9-hole course. A visit to Naldehra is incomplete without a trip to Shimla, which is merely 27 km from Naldehra.
Located 23 km from Shimla, this beautiful town is surrounded by
wooded forests and lush green hills with the Sutlej River meandering around it.
Naldehra has hosted many golf tournaments in the country. Initially, it was
laid out as a 9-hole course; later, it was expanded to an 18-hole Golf Course –
16 Greens and 18 Tees.
Naldehra derives its name from a Snake God Temple – The Dehra of
Nagraj (King of Snakes). The Mahunag Temple with the Snake God as the main
deity is located in the middle of the Naldehra Golf Course. This temple is also
a prime attraction to tourists here and can be best visited on honeymoon tours in Himachal.
