Monsoon Destinations in the North

by Madhav Srinivasan 5 year, 3 months ago

The northern region in India is a hotbed for tourism, thanks to the many empires and cultures that were centered up north. While packing up for an off season trip, you can visit destinations ranging from Leh in Ladakh to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan…

Are you planning an off season vacation? There are many beautiful places in India that are ideal spots to visit during this time of the year. If you’re planning on covering the northern part of India, there are two must visit locations that you shouldn’t miss – Leh and Jaisalmer.

Leh – Tibetan India

In a remote corner of Jammu and Kashmir in Ladakh, surrounded by snow covered peaks, lies the picturesque town of Leh, 3505 meters above sea level. Leh was the former capital of the kingdom of Ladakh. This place is predominantly Buddhist, and the lifestyle and architecture are distinctly Tibetan. Book your Leh Ladakh tours in North India for an enchating holiday.

Leh is an ideal monsoon destination as it does not normally experience intense rainfall. It is considered a cold desert, though in recent years, due to global climate changes, Leh has been experiencing more rains.

While there are many flights connecting Leh to Srinagar and Jammu, the road routes are mainly open during the monsoons. The Manali-Leh Highway is open during June to October and the Srinagar-Leh route is open during June to November.

What to See

The Shanthi Stupa, the 800 year old Kali Mandir, the Tibetan style Leh Palace, the Thiksey Monastery and the Hemis Gompa Monastery are the biggest tourist attraction in Leh.

What to Enjoy

There are many trekking trails in and around Leh.

Hiking, paragliding and white-water rafting are the major adventure sports of this region. The Ladakh Festival takes place in the first two weeks of September and the two day Hemis Gompa festival is held in June/July.

Jaisalmer – The Golden City

Set amidst sand dunes, with its beautiful sandstone buildings, the name Golden City fits Jaisalmer well. Jaisalmer was one of the princely states of Rajasthan and it was founded by Raja Jaisal, who built a magnificent sandstone fortress here.

The best time to book Jaisalmer tour packages is from October to March, so if head out on a trip to the desert land if you’re bored of the constant rains in your region.

What to See

Jaisalmer has beautiful palaces and mansions. It has many attractive Havelis or mansions built by rich families, which are major tourist spots.

There are many interesting places to visit and explore inside the city, mainly the Jaisalmer Fort. About 25% of the city’s population still lives inside the fort. The fort contains the beautiful Raj Mahal (Royal Palace), the two Jain Temples and the Laxminath Temple.

It has a rich Jain heritage and there are many Jain Temples here. The most notable among these are the temples dedicated to Lord Shantinath and Lord Parshvanath, two of the important Jain Thirthankaras. These are must visit places on Rajasthan holidays, not just for the religiously inclined, but for everyone.

What to Enjoy

A three day desert festival is held during the months of January/February, and this attracts a lot of visitors. You can unwind and experience a taste of the local culture during this fest. Take up camel safaris into the desert, and it’ll be an experience that you’ll never forget.

When you’re looking to take up an off season trip to the north, there are many destinations that you can try. Pick the ones that suit your preferences and don’t think twice – you’ll surely have a great time.
