India won its freedom from British rule on the 15th of August, 1947, and from then on, this day has been marked as Independence Day to commemorate the birth of a liberated democratic nation.

Independence Day is a national holiday in India and patriotic songs are played or sung throughout the country during this day. Various functions, parades, flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural events are held in remembrance of the many freedom fighters who laid their lives for the country.

To experience the magnitude of the celebrations, you should visit the Red Fort or the Wagah Border once on this day.

Independence Day Celebrations - The Red Fort

Extensive Independence Day celebrations are carried out near the Red Fort in New Delhi. On this day, the Prime Minister of India unfurls the tri-colored national flag and addresses the nation about the country’s past achievements, current status and future plans.

A gun salute is then carried out and the Prime Minister then witnesses a parade of the police and the armed forces. This is followed by various patriotic programs that are presented by school children. The entire event is telecast live on TV through Doordarshan. Similar functions are held in all state capitals as well.

Independence Day Celebrations – Wagah Border

Wagah, a small village near the city of Amritsar, houses the only Grand Trunk Road that connects India and Pakistan. On the eve of Independence Day, as a mark of celebration, officials from both countries exchange greetings and gifts and this is witnessed by a sizeable crowd. Rows of chairs are arranged for the public on both sides of the gate, and you can witness the event comfortably if you travel to Wagah.

General Independence Day Celebrations

  • In all educational institutions, the national anthem is sung and the Indian flag is hoisted. Stories of freedom fighters like Gandhi and Bhagat Singh are narrated to the students.
  • Television and radio channels usually telecast various patriotic movies, songs and programs that rekindle patriotism.
  • On this day, the sky over Delhi will be peppered with hundreds of kites in different shapes, sizes and colors as kites signify freedom and liberation.
  • Building and monuments of national importance such as India Gate are beautifully decorated with lighting and people flock to visit such places.

The entire population comes together as one during Independence Day, and traveling around to major historical or national destinations can be an exciting experience due to this reason.
