What You Can Do in Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji is known for its natural beauty that is starkly displayed by the beautiful valleys and hills, which attract tourists from all over the world. The biggest attraction here is Mawsmai Falls, which is located at a height of 1035 feet. It is situated in the outskirts of Cherrapunji and is the fourth highest waterfall in India. This waterfall features on the must-see list of every tourist, as the view is simply mesmerizing.

Since Cherrapunji is a wet place, it is rich in vegetation and surrounded by beautiful dense forests that house some of the rarest plants. The drive to Cherrapunji is one that you should look out for as you’re sure to catch some striking views. You can go trekking through the dense forests, although it might be a good idea to hire a guide first.  

Visit Nohkalikai Falls, a spot that is very famous and well known for its calming surroundings. Laitkynsew is a village near Cherrapunji that is again a must visit place as it has a bridge made of roots from trees called the Double Decker Root Bridge which help the natives to commute.

Some of the other places to visit are Ramakrishna mission and the British Cemetery. Khoh Ramhah/Pillar Rock is a place for peace and tranquility; as you can go there to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Getting to Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji is situated about 60 kilometers from Shillong and there are bus and taxi services which can take you up to the valley. The weather can be quite a hindrance during the monsoon months (although it rains almost all the time), bringing about a halt in the uphill transport. There are private bus services as well as buses provided by the state, but if you prefer your privacy and value it highly, you can hire a private taxi to roam around the region.

You can get to Cherrapunji by air as the nearest airport is located at Shillong and there are daily flights from Kolkata and Guwahati. There are direct trains that run from Guwahati to Cherrapunji as well, and traveling through trains in this route can be an amazing experience, thanks to its natural beauty. You can book Cherrapunji tours from Kolkata as well.

If you’re planning on visiting Cherrapunji, there’s no particular season that you can go for as it rains all through the year. There is no particular off season, and you can visit the place during any time of the year. One more advantage is that it rains only in the night, so your day activities will not be affected.

Since Cherrapunji is a tourist spot, there are a wide variety of hotels, resorts and guest houses ranging from two stars to five star options. These hotels provide their customers with state of the art facilities and the works.
