Konark Dance and Music Festival
The Konark festival is one of the most famous Indian festivals. The temple and its surroundings reverberate to the sounds of drums and flutes and to the sounds of tinkling anklets of the dancers.
The Konark Dance and Music festival is one of the oldest and
certainly one of the most popular cultural festivals in India. The setting of
the festival is in itself a grand sight. The beautiful 700-year-old Sun Temple
at Konark is an architectural wonder and a World Heritage Site.
This temple is designed in the form of a chariot
with 12 wheels, representing the chariot of Surya, the Sun God. The dance hall
of this temple has exquisite carvings of various dance poses. The walls of the
temples actually depict a cultural celebration by themselves. The figures of
musicians and dancers cover all the walls here along with figures of Hindu
Deities, animals, bird and mythological creatures.
The Festival’s History
