Konark Dance and Music Festival

by Madhav Srinivasan 1988 days ago

The Konark festival is one of the most famous Indian festivals. The temple and its surroundings reverberate to the sounds of drums and flutes and to the sounds of tinkling anklets of the dancers.

The Konark Dance and Music festival is one of the oldest and certainly one of the most popular cultural festivals in India. The setting of the festival is in itself a grand sight. The beautiful 700-year-old Sun Temple at Konark is an architectural wonder and a World Heritage Site.

This temple is designed in the form of a chariot with 12 wheels, representing the chariot of Surya, the Sun God. The dance hall of this temple has exquisite carvings of various dance poses. The walls of the temples actually depict a cultural celebration by themselves. The figures of musicians and dancers cover all the walls here along with figures of Hindu Deities, animals, bird and mythological creatures.

The Festival’s History

The Konark Dance and Music Festival was started by Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan as an initiative to bring together all the various dance and music forms of the country on one platform. This grand festival showcases the diverse art forms of the country, bringing together artists from across the nation in a cultural celebration.

First held in the year 1986, the festival celebrated its Silver jubilee in 2010. The festival is scheduled to be held in 2012 from 19 to 23 February.

The Performances

The performances will be held in an open air auditorium against the backdrop of the glorious Sun Temple. Dancers will perform Odissi, Kathak, Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam and various other forms of dance. The multiple music disciplines of the country will also be on display here. In addition to classical art forms, tribal dance and music performances are also on show during this festival.

The festival is organized annually by Odissi Research Center and Orissa tourism. The Sun Temple, always a favored tourist destination, comes alive every year during this celebration; it brings together artists of various disciplines and attracts music lovers from all over the country and across the world.
