Kanatal is an unspoilt hill station in Uttarakhand. Located at a convenient six-hour drive from Delhi, Kanatal is accessible from Dehradun and the ever popular Mussorie, and it offers the tourist a haven of tranquillity in the foothills of the Himalayas and is a must visit place for those planning a holiday in Himachal Pradesh.

Kanatal is located 2590 metres above sea-level. The weather in Kanatal is a pleasant 10 degree Celsius during the summer and a chilly 0-5 degree Celsius during winter. It experiences heavy snowfall during winter and the sight of snow-capped mountains will be enough to invigorate the most jaded tourists.

How to Reach Kanatal

Kanatal can be easily reached by road from Delhi and Dehradun by state buses and cabs. The nearest airport is Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport. The nearest railheads are Dehradun and Haridwar and varieties of Dehradun tours are available.

This quaint hill station is accessible by road, as it lies just 35 kilometres away from the bustling town of Mussorie and 300 kilometres from Delhi on the Rishikesh-Chamba-Mussoorie route. It lies 35 kilometres from Dehradun on the Delhi-Dhanolti route.

What You Can See and Do

The town of Kanatal draws its name from a lake in the region, which is also called Kanatal. This lake has a temple dedicated to the Goddess Sati. The temple, built of wood in a style that’s peculiar to the Garhwali region, offers a spectacular view of the forests and snow covered peaks nearby.

Kanatal offers tourists miles and miles of walks through quiet hamlets and verdant forests. The crisp mountain air and friendly folk from this region make this town a palace where city dwellers can escape from their noisy lives and listen to the sweet sound of silence. The places of tourist interest in an around this town are Tehri Dam,  at the confluence of the rivers Bhagirathi and Bhilaganga, the planned town of New Tehri, the Surkhanda Devi Temple, and the Kodia jungle en route to Chamba.

The Surkhanda Temple is steeped in ancient legend and the temple witnesses crowds of devotees all year around. It is built in the style typical to Tehri Garhwal and is a steep two kilometre trek away from the town.

Dhanaulti is another beautiful hill station which lies a mere 22 kilometres away from Kanatal. Rishikesh is located at a distance of 75 kilometres from Kanatal and it is famous for its spas and white water rafting facilities.
