Ever considered dancing and walking in a carnival 10,000 feet above the sea level? The Chemry Angchok festival celebrated in Leh is a portrayal of Ladakh’s vibrant culture and a truly nomadic way of life. It is celebrated in the month of November.

Chemry Angchok is a bright celebration of the rich cultural diversity in Ladakh. It is a two day festival that includes theatre performances, music arts and traditional folk dances and masks. If you are a fine arts buff, dances signifying the victory of good over evil will leave you mesmerized. Theatre performances depicting stories of Tibetan and Buddhist divinities are things to watch out for in the festival. People were colorful masks and dresses to take part in the carnival on thier holiday in Leh Ladakh.

The festival is generally centered on the Chemry Monastery which is located at a distance of 45 kilometers from Leh. The monastery is nestled in the beautiful valley of Changla and has a vast collection of scriptures, which have texts written in golden letters and titles in sterling silver. It is said that Swami Padma Sambhava found shelter in one of the caves here, during his periods of meditation.

When is it Celebrated

The Chemry Monastery was founded in the year 1664 and has since been celebrating this festival annually. Its unique dances and performances draw many tourists to Ladakh. This annual festival is celebrated with lot of grandeur in the month of November. It is generally scheduled to be held during the 28th and 29th day of the 9th month as per the Tibetan calendar. The final carnival passes through the streets of Leh with people cheering it from their homes. Ladakh is an important place to vacation in North India
