Caress the Clouds in Keylong

A lofty little town set amongst the snow capped peaks in Himachal Pradesh, Keylong is fast becoming a popular tourist destination. This place has a PWD Rest House, a Travelers Bungalow and some small hotels.

Keylong is the administrative center of the Lahaul and Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh. It is an overnight stop on the way from Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh. This little town is located 120 km from the Tibetan border on the Manali-Leh Road and can be included on Himachal Pradesh tours.

This beautiful place is situated at a height of 3080 meters on the banks of the Bhaga River; you can almost touch and play with the clouds that hang over the hills. Across the river and very near to Keylong, you can find the largest Monastery belonging to the Drukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism ‑ the Khardong Monastery. The Shasur and Tayul Monasteries are also located near Keylong.

Keylong is also famous for the Lahaul Festival held here every July and its markets and cultural shows attract many visitors to book Keylong holiday trip.

Places to See Near Keylong

Beside the famous Tibetan Monasteries, there are other places you could visit near Keylong:

Tandi: This tiny village witnesses the confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga Rivers, forming the Chandrabhaga River, which is also known as River Chenab.

Triloknath Temple: The Famous Triloknath temple ‑ a stone and timber structure ‑ is a shrine that is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. It is located on the left bank of the Chandrabhaga River.

Jispa: This beautiful little village near the Bhaga River is an angler’s paradise as the shallow waters near the village are full of trout, and it is a great place to visit during the summer.

Gondla: This place has the royal residence of the local ruler called the Gondla Castle, which was built in the 17th century. The annual fair held here in June also attracts a lot of visitors.

Shasur Gompa: This Gompa was built in the 16th century, and it has a 5-meter-long Thangpa – a beautiful Tibetan style silk tapestry.

Khardong Gompa: Located across the Bhaga River from Keylong, this 12th Century Gompa has a large statue of Buddha and a library housing old manuscripts.

Sissu: This is a little village on the banks of the Chandra River. This place is a feast to the eyes with its riot of colors. You can find dense plantations of Poplar and Willow Trees and slopes decked with wild roses of various hues and alpine flowers.


Keylong, a high altitude stopover on the Himachal Pradesh-Ladakh route, is a lovely little place that has its own attractions for the tourists and is the Keylong honeymoon tours in Himachal are available. From November to April, this place is cut off from the rest of the world as the Rohtang Pass is blocked by heavy snowfall.
