The Bikaner Camel festival represents the exotic side of India. A visit to the deserts of Rajasthan to watch the camels strut about displaying their best features can be an unforgettable experience.

The Bikaner Camel festival is held annually during the winters when the harsh desert climate is at its most pleasant. The event is organized by the Rajasthan Government’s Department of Tourism, Art and Culture. A holiday in Bikaner during the Camel festival gives you a glimpse into life in this colorful and exotic land.

It’s possible to watch and enjoy the performances put up by the camels without being hemmed in by huge crowds. Although the festival is inaugurated in Bikaner city, the actual events are held at Ladera village. The village is at a distance of 45 km from Bikaner and is a popular inclusion in most of Rajasthan tour packages

What Happens at the Bikaner Camel Festival

Inaugural Procession: The Bikaner camel festival begins with a colorful procession against the backdrop of the stunning Junagarh fort. The camels are specially decked up for the event with anklets, necklaces and heavily embroidered saddles. Once the procession is over, the festival shifts over to the open sands of Ladera village.

Events: There are various events that are scheduled throughout the 3-day festival. These include competitions such as camel milking, camel races, fur designing, camel dancing and best breed competition. Camel rides are also organized. There is also a camel acrobatic show. The more adventurous can have a sip of freshly drawn camel milk.

Cultural Show: The Bikaner camel festival is not all about camels. It is also the perfect showcase to display the traditional arts and crafts of Rajasthan. The performance by various local troupes adds loads of color to the festivities. Some of the cultural shows that attract visitors include fire dance and the local folk dances such Ghoomur. These shows are mainly held in the evening after the camel races and events have concluded. The evening ends with a magnificent fireworks display.

Food Fair: One of the highlights of the fair is the chance to sample some of the more popular dishes in Rajasthani cuisine. The food includes local delicacies such as choorma and dal baati. When in Bikaner tourists should no miss a trip to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. 

Sightseeing Around Bikaner

There are also plenty of sights to see around Bikaner, and these can be included in your itinery. The city is home to several elaborate palaces and heavily decorated temples. The most famous is the Junagarh fort, which is often cited as an example of traditional Rajput architecture. The city of Bikaner has developed around this red sandstone fort and is a popular place to enjoy vacation in North India. The city also has the famous Karni Mata temple, which is overrun by rats and considered holy by the devotees. 

How to Reach Bikaner

The nearest airport is at Jodhpur, which is 240 km away. There are also good train and road connections. Bikaner is around 500 km away from Delhi and the connecting roads are in excellent condition. The city is connected by train to Delhi, Jodhpur, Howrah, Kalka and Jaipur.
