Ask a local, and the picture he paints of this granddaddy of backpackers ghetto is not pretty, i must say! Proximity and budget needs which primarily attracted thousands of backpackers for years, is now slowly fading away with the rubble and dirt which is encroaching the area, so much so that "Sam's Cafe" a popular hang out in the area has seen a 25% slump in the number of travelers.
With the pre- Common Wealth Games face lift on, still backpackers would not go by a new town, they come here to experience what they call "Real India". A trade mark of travelers in their Alibaba pants and restaurants trying to serve up that salad and chicken wrap in the lure of these back packers, hawkers and beggars trying to make hay while the sun shines; are all images of the India they came here to see.
What i think of all this, yes our roads aren't the best, we have beggars on the streets, performers trying to lure the passerby, but home is where the heart is; so whether they are in the form of white Hare Rama Bakhts, Madonna sporting the bindi or Louis Vitton's Diwali collection of silk weaves, we are making heads spin around the globe!
So, here's hoping back packers and travelers will get much more of what the city has to offer, post the Common Wealth Games!
