The Shivalik range of the Himalayas has an offshoot in Morni Hills in the Panchkula district, which is about 45 km from the City of Gardens, Chandigarh. It is a hill resort famous for its view points, trekking and rock-climbing activities. It is also a bird-watchers’ paradise. It can be conviently visited by taking up Chandigarh tour packages.

Along the Morni Hills

Morni Hills are easily reachable by road from Chandigarh, and the best time of the year to visit is between the months of September and March. This place is located at about 1220 m above sea level. According to the local legend, the hill was named after Queen Morni, who is believed to have ruled this area. The hills are a rich source of flora and fauna, which attracts tourists from India and abroad. There is a temple on the hill, which is dedicated to Trimurti and believed to be dating back to the 12th century. The river Ghajjar flows down the slopes of Morni Hills, providing respite on hot summer days. As an offshoot of the mighty Himalayas, the Morni Hills are covered in evergreen forests, mostly pine. In the spring, the hillside is adorned by flowers blooming everywhere. Trees like pine, sal, ritha, papal, mango and jamun flourish on the Morni Hills, providing plenty of timber. The wildlife on the hills includes hyenas, langur, jackals, sambhal deer, leopards and blue bulls. Birds such as Kalij pheasant, red jungle fowl and Himalayan bulbul can also be found to the delight of bird watchers.

There are many activities to engage in like trekking, rock climbing and bird-watching to keep you engaged. There are also a couple of inter-connected lakes that delight the visitors as the connection is an underground channel, but on the surface, they appear to be separated by a hillock. There are plenty of hotels and resorts to stay in Morni Hills that cater to the tourists, ranging from luxury resorts to budget hotels. There are guest bungalows that are run by the Haryana State Tourism Department. From Chandigarh, it is hardly an hour’s drive to reach Morni Hills; so, it is an ideal weekend getaway spot for people in and around Chandigarh.

As New Delhi is also not very far, many people from Delhi try and escape to Morni Hills for the weekends, especially on long weekends. The pine-covered hillside has many hotels and resorts, and hence, it is ideal for a quick weekend getaway.
