A Trip to Anthargange

by Madhav Srinivasan 5 year, 8 months ago

Anthargange is a religious place and a pilgrimage center. Recently, it has become famous as an adventure sport destination, for trekkers and rock climbers, with its hills of volcanic rocks. Here’s more…

Anthargange is a mountain range located in the Kolar district of Karnataka. It lies at a distance of about 70 km from Bangalore. Thanks to its proximity to the city, you can take a trip to Karnataka to visit Anthargange whenever you feel the adrenaline coursing through your veins.

There is a hilltop shrine here, on a hill, and this shrine has a perennial spring that runs beneath it. Thanks to this shrine, Anthargange attracts many pilgrims through the year.

Adventure Options in Anthargange

Anthargange is a rocky hill range formed out of volcanic rocks and the peaks rise to heights of more than 1226 meters above sea level.

The Lesser Known Caves

The rocks and boulders form several interesting caves, big and small, which are by themselves an attraction to adventure travelers. If exploring through lesser known spaces is what you crave for, then these caves can satisfy your thirst for some excitement.  Explore these caves, but take a guide with you to help out. Some caves are so small that you’ll have to crawl through them on your South India holidays.

Trekking Trails and Rappelling

Apart from the caves, Anthargange also offers opportunities for trekking and rock climbing. The place has trekking trails which are good for light trekking and provide scenic views as you hike up the hills. The rocky hills also offer good opportunities for rock climbing and rappelling, and you can check these out too.

Anthargange is just 70 km away from Bangalore, so residents from the city who are looking to take a small weekend tour can easily plan a trip here, even a day trip. But, if you plan on doing many strenuous activities, it might be better to plan an overnight stay at a nearby hotel.

What Pilgrims Can Do

On one of the hills in this range is a perennial spring which flows out in a stream halfway up. This water fills a pond, and it is considered to be very sacred among Hindus. This is the place that gives the region of Anthargange its name.

The Anthargange spring and pond are centers of religious significance and on top of the hill is an ancient temple that’s dedicated to Lord Shiva. You have to climb up some stone steps to reach the stream and the shrine. The ascent will provide glorious views of the surrounding areas. You can also spot a large number of monkeys here. This site and the temple are well maintained by the government.

Getting to Anthargange

It is best to plan a car trip to Anthargange if you’re visiting the place by taking up tours from Bangalore.

The road route to Kolar is excellent and mostly traffic free, when compared to the route from Bangalore city. It is a smooth ride to Kolar, and you have to travel a few kilometers from outside Kolar to reach Anthargange. You can also reach Kolar by bus and then use local bus services or taxis to reach Anthargange.
