West Bengal is an Indian state located towards the eastern side of the country. Kolkata is its capital city and Bengali is the language spoken widely by people. It is bordered by states like Assam, Orissa, Jharkhand, Sikkim and Bihar and by countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal.

The state comprises of the Gangetic plain and the Himalayan area. West Bengal holds much importance in the Indian Independence struggle. Kolkata was the capital of the erstwhile British India. The state has produced many luminaries in the field of literature, fine arts and music. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore belonged to the state and was the first Asian Nobel Laureate.

Darjeeling lies in the lap of the Himalayan ranges. The very view of snow capped mountains can bring bliss to your day. The place is also famous for its toy trains and water rafting amenities. Other scenic places nearby Darjeeling are Batasia Loop, Kalimpong, and Kurseong.

Sunderban is the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger and this region houses the world’s largest estuarine forests. You have to take a boat through the river amidst the forests to get an enchanting view of the vast mangrove. Crocodiles can be found on the banks and are a rare sight.

Murshidabad and Shantiniketan validate the rich heritage of the state. Murshidabad was the epitome of discussions and royal households in the eighteenth century. Shantiniketan is where the famous Indian Poet and Nobel laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore lived and is home to the Visva-Bharati University. Murshidabad has many forts and houses the famous Imambara.

Kolkata is renowned for its literary, revolutionary and artistic heritage. Famous scholars in the field of literature like Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Mahashweta Devi and Nazrul Islam belong to West Bengal.

Kolkata houses the famous Victoria Memorial, Nicco Park, Dakhineshwar, Nakhoda Mosque, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Birla Planetarium. The Howrah Bridge is built over the river Hooghly and is marvel in the field of architecture. The Digha beach is calm and shallow and is safe for swimming. There are many resorts here and these provide a very soothing and calm atmosphere.

Roadways connect Kolkata directly to all the metropolitan cities in India and the neighboring states. Driving down from Kolkata to Mumbai, Guwahati or Delhi is an experience in itself and worth a try. There are a lot of gas stations and eateries along the highway.
