Gopishvar stands for Lord Siva who is regarded as the redeemer of the gopis. The temple enshrines the destroyer lord in the form of a gopi. The tale behind this is very curious and funny. Once Lord Shiva wanted to see the rasa dance and since he is a male he was denied entry and then the lord took a bathe in the Mansarovar and got the shape of a female. When he came back to see the rasa dance, Krishna asked him to guard the entrance of the dance so that no one could enter the rasa Mandala with out his permission. One will get a brief description of this legend in the Garga Samhita text.

Pouring holy waters of Yamuna on the Shiva Lingam is the main ritual in the temple. The papal tree on the temple premises is believed to be the fulfiller of all the wishes and regarded as a Kalpha Vrisha by the devotees.

Temple celebrates Shivaratri with much fervor, which falls during Feb-March. Jhulana Purnima is the other auspicious day in the temple. Another temple dedicated to Parvathi devi adorns the near surrounding of Gopishvar. Temple Timings are from 6.00 am to 12 noon and 4 to 9 pm in the winter and 5 am to 12 noon and 4 to 9 pm in the summer.
