Mainly inhabited by agricultural community, plenty of canals going through this place irrigate the farm land throughout the Krishna delta. Vijayawada is a significant trade and commerce hub and an important administrative center of Krishna District. Vijayawada was an integral part of Vijayanagar Empire under the great king Sri Krishna Devarayar. Vijayawada is mentioned in various legends and myths. It is believed that Lord Shiva blessed Arjuna, great warrior of epic Mahabharatha, locating at the top of a hill known as lndrakeeladri and Arjuna created Vijayawada. Another myth states that Goddess Durga relaxed in this holy place after destroying a Rakshasa and hence the name Land of Victory or Vijayawada. This place attracts lots of tourists, main tourist attractions are Undavalli Caves, Prakasam Barrage, Gandhi Stupa on Gandhi Hill, The Mogalarajapuram Caves and Kanakadurga Temple. BusBuses knit the entire cityscape together and regular buses will always be available to all parts of the city. All buses in the public sector are run under the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. City buses can be quite crowded during the peak hours, and all buses ply from Krishnalanka to other parts of the city. Bus fares will range around Rs 5 to 20, depending on the distance covered. Auto RickshawAuto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are also available in Vijayawada, with auto rickshaws being the faster mode of transport. They do not run on meter and fares have to be fixed or negotiated in advance. Tariffs during night travel may be one and a half times the actual rate. Cycle rickshaw rides are cheap and fares will range anywhere within Rs 5-15, but these rickshaws are very slow. TaxiCabs in Vijayawada are available in plenty, and these cabs charge fares of around Rs 14 per kilometer. Cabs, buses and auto rickshaws will all be available from major places like the railway station. Besides Kanakadurga temple and Mary matha church, Gunadala one can visit Gandhi hill (behind railway station), Victoria Museum, Boating near Prakasam Barrage and Bhavani island in river Krishna.
