Varanasi, also renowned as Kashi and Banaras, is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The holy city Varanasi, believed to be founded by Lord Shiva about 5000 years ago, is placed picturesquely on the west bank of Holy Ganges River and is one of the most revered religious destinations in India. Varanasi has got its name from the two rivers Varuna located at the north and Assi located at the south of the city. This place has got its mentions in the holy epics Ramayana and Mahabharata and varieties of cheap tour packages are available.

The importance of the Varanasi (Kashi) lies in the religious belief that those who die in the area in the Kashi city bounded by the Panch Kashi Road will attain the salvation. The city is thronged by thousands of Hindu devotees every day through out the year. The history of Varanasi is as old as the beginning of civilization itself. Lord Shiva, 5000 years ago is credited as the founder of the city. Being one among the seven most scared cities for the Hindus, Varanasi also known as Benaras, has been mentioned in various Hindu scriptures like Rigveda, Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Skanda Purana.

The city of Varansi has great religious significance. Even the history of the city is closely linked to the beliefs of the religion. The city is known to have been the capital of the Kingdom of Kashi during the time of Gautam Buddha.

During the 18th century, Varanasi became an important center for commercial and religion. During this time the city served as an independent kingdom under the British rule. In the year 1910, the British declared Varanasi as the new Indian state with headquarters at Ramnagar.

Varanasi has been renowned as an important set of learning since ancient times. Some of the most prominent scholars associated with Varanasi are the novelist Prem Chand and the popular saint-poet, Tulsi Das. The famous musicians Ravi Shankar and Ustad Bismillah Khan have also lived in the city for most part of their lives.

Rich endowments of the past culture and religious significance has given this city the title of being ‘the cultural capital of India’.

Travel within city

Varanasi is a well connected city, mainly connected through its airport and railway station. The airport is located around 25 km from the city and there are airport taxis as well as private taxis that are available from the airport. They will usually cost around Rs 500 to the city center.

There are two main railway stations around the city and also 16 sub stations. Most of the stations are well connected to the rest of the city either through buses or auto rickshaws. Auto rickshaw stands are available outside the railway station and they are usually metered. However they may charge extra fare during the night and travelers.

The most widely used local transport systems are the cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws. Travelers also have the option of mini-buses and river steamers.

Cycle Rickshaw

Cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws are available at street corners. The prices are negotiable and the auto rickshaws may not be metered. Cycles rickshaws are cheap and good option for short distances.


Mini buses stop every kilometer and they are cheap. They charge around Rs 35 from end of the city to the other.


River steamer and small boats are used to cross the Ganga River. They usually cost around Rs 100 per trip.

It is very good site for travelling India at different places which are new to us..
This site is giving very good information and also very flexible...
because I am getting the trains which are not getting IRCTC or Indian railways...
And it also showing map root and also seat booking facility...
