History reminds us that during campaign against the Portuguese the Maratha warrior Chimaji Appa, tired and fatigued from the skirmishes, had set a camp at Ganeshpuri / Akoli area. The camp was required to recharge the worn out soldiers for the siege of the fort of Vasai. However, when the fort remained unconquered even after 2 years of siege, Chimaji Appa turned towards the divine and vowed to the Goddess at the Vajraeshawari temple to construct a temple similar to Vasai temple if the fort was conquered. The trick worked and The Marathas won the fort in 1739. As promised a huge temple of Vajreshwari was constructed on the hills.

The Street leading to the temple hill is flocked from both flanks by shops providing all the offering material. A gargantuan Deep-stambha stands tall at the location. Small trek up the stone steps takes one right at the doorsteps of the shrine. The temple has been made from huge rock boulders and small idols of gods and goddesses adore the pillars as well as the walls. The temple main area that houses the Goddess is poorly lit (only oil/ghee lamps). A walk around the shrine and towards the pavilion atop the hill provides a breathtaking view of the countryside.
