Panchwati, literally means five (panch) banyan trees (vata), is a holy place as per Hindu mythology. The town is located on the banks of the River Godavari where in Five Banyan trees are situated.
The epic Ramayana is closely associated with each and every part of Panchvati. It is at this place Lord Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Laxmana stayed during their exile for fourteen years in the jungles. A cave temple known as Sita Gupha is located at this place. It is at this cave Lord Rama offered worship to Lord Shiva. This temple has an ancient Shivalinga and devotees visit this ancient cave regularly.
Laxmana had cut the nose and breast of Surpanaka at Panchvati. It was from Panchvati where Ravana abducted Sita and flown to Lanka. At present Panchvati is a famous religious tourist attraction near to Trimbakeshwar.
