History

The historical town of Trichy, also known as Tiruchirapalli, goes back to the flourishing age of the Chola period that began from 300 B.C. Archaeological artifacts and historical data link Woiyer (present day part of trichy) to have been under the control of the Chola kings even during the reigns of Kalabhra interregnum, i.e. from 300-575 A.D.

After the falls of the Chola Empire, Tiruchirapalli came under the rule of Mahendra Varma Pallav, who ruled from 590 A.D. to 880 A.D. However, in 880 A.D. the Greater Cholas, marked the end of the Pallavs. In 1225 A.D. the city came under the Hoysulas and then under the Pandayas, who practically ruled till the fall of their empire in the year 1565.

Historical data confirms this city to have been under the leadership of the Nayaks till the 1736 A.D. it was during this time that the magnificent Teppakulam and Fort were built. After the Nayaks, the Marathas, the Nawabs of Carnatic and the French are also known to have ruled the city for some time.

Mughals ruled here with the assistance of the French and the British. However, British completely gained the control of the city and remained so till the independence of the country.

Travel within city

Travelling around Tiruchy is easy, as the city is well developed and has a good network of travel options. There are many buses and auto rickshaws available for travel in the city of Tiruchy, and a network of share auto rickshaws also ply through the city.

Bus

While travelling in Tiruchy, opting for bus travel can be a wise choice as the buses comprehensively cover all parts of the city. Travelling through bus in Tiruchy is also relatively safe as buses as always moderately crowded even during night time. The bus fares are also cheap and travelling in bus may cost you around Rs 3 to 9.

Auto Rickshaw

You can also opt for auto rickshaws in the city of Tiruchy, and these do not run on meter. Auto rickshaw drivers are bound to demand for a rate that is higher than the actual amount, so you should be aware of the local rates from the start. Talking to the locals and finding out the basic rates can help. Make sure you bargain for a good rate as fares will never go beyond Rs 70.
