Agnipureeswarar Temple is a revered shrine assumed to be one (the 126th) in the series of Tevara Stalams in the Chola Region covering the south of the Kaveri River. Agnipreeswarar (Lord Shiva) is the prime deity in this ancient temple. Legendary stories tell that great sage Agastyar observed the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at this holy place in Thiruvarur. This temple faces east.

As per the popular belief, the Agnipureeswarar Temple has its origin in the hermitage built by sage Agasthya. The temple surroundings are tempting and good for solitude seeking pilgrims. There are many inscriptions in the temple related to the epics and the rulers in the Chola period.
