The Vijayanagar fort is located about 2 km to the north east of the Brahadeeswara or the Big Temple. This fort was built partly by Nayaks and partly by Maratha rulers during the early 1550 AD. Inside the fort is the Tanjore Palace, Sangeetha Mahal, Saraswathi Mahal Library as well as an art gallery that has various collections of sculptures and paintings.
The fort was built to safeguard the palace from enemies by the Nayak king Vijay Raghav. Siva Ganga garden is located inside the fort and part of the fort is opened to the general public and most part of the fort is in ruins now.
