Tamil Nadu is an Indian state and lies in the country’s southern part. Tamil is the language spoken in the state and Chennai is its capital city. It is bordered by the states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh and houses the union territory of Puducherry. The Eastern Ghats, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, Palk Strait and the Annamalai Hills envelope the state.

Tamil people have been inhabitants of the state since 500 BC. The various tourist destinations present in the state range from beach resorts and hill stations, to sites of Dravidian architecture and temples. Tamil Nadu is the second largest tourist destination in India and also a major contributor to the country’s GDP.

Destinations to Visit

Some of the most distinguished temples in the state are the Airavateshwara Temple in Darasuram, the Brihadishwara Temple in Thanjavur (which was built by the Cholas), and the Nellaiappar Temple situated in the heart of Tirunelveli. Mahabalipuram has many temples and monuments which are listed under the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Some more popular temples include the ones in Chidambaram, Tiruttani, Karur, Bhavani, Namakkal, Tiruvar, and Coimbatore.

Tamil Nadu has some of the most beautiful hill stations like Yercaud, Valparai, Coonoor, Kodaikanal, Udhagamandalam, Topslip, Manjolai and Yelagiri. Flora and fauna are abundant in the Palani Hills, Nilgiri Hills, Kolli Hills, Shevaroy hills and Cardamom hills.

The Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve and Mukthi National Park are the main tiger reserves in the state. Many biosphere reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and bird and elephant sanctuaries can be found in the state. The Pichavaram forests are a delight for eco-tourists as they have vast mangroves.

Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of the country and is famous for its sunrise. Chennai houses the famous Marina beach, which is one of the longest of its kind in the world. Hogenakkal, Courtallam, Manimuthar, Pykara and Papanasam are some of the waterfalls in the state. The Chettinad region is renowned in the country for its cuisine and palaces. Tamil Nadu is also one of the major destinations for medical tourism.

The Vivekananda Rock Memorial is another famous monument that is located in Kanyakumari.

By Air

The Meenambakam International Airport in Chennai receives flights from most of the major cities in the world such as Sharjah, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, London, Hong Kong, New York, Frankfurt, Muscat, Colombo, Bangkok and Kuwait.

By Trains

The railway station at Chennai serves as a major junction and has trains to almost all the cities in India like Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata. It has direct trains to all the major and minor cities in India. Major railheads in the state are Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai.

By Road

Chennai’s CMBT bus station is one of Asia’s largest. The state is well connected with all the neighboring states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It is however comfortable to hire private cabs to ply within and from the state.
