Popularly known as Tabo Monastery, Chogskhor Monastery, is the most popular attraction in Tabo. Founded in the 996 CE by the great Tibetan Buddhist lotswa (translator), Rinchen Zangpo, the king of western Himalayan Kingdom of Guge.
The monastery is located in thevery arid, cold and rocky area at an altitude of 3,050 mts in Spiti Valley and is surrounded by high mud brick wall and spreads on an area of 6,300 sq ft and encompasses many temples, halls and monks residence.
The present monasrty is a reconstructed one because the ancient monastery was destroyed by the earthquake that hit the region in the year 1975. Large thangakas, many statues of Lord Buddha, manuscripts, well-preserved frescoes and murals adorn the walls of the monastery.
