Swaminathaswamy Temple in Swamimalai is famed as one of the six holy abodes of Lord Subramanya. The ancient temple, constructed on an artificial hill with astounding surroundings, can be reached by a flight of steps. The presiding deity Lord Muruga in this temple is worshipped as Swaminathan and hence the name Swaminathaswamy Temple.

The temple structure is attractive with three 'gopurams' and three 'praharam'. The southern 'gopuram' is attractive with many beautiful statues and has five levels with a tower. Other two ‘gopurams’ have no towers.

This temple is the fourth among the Arupadai veedu, the battle fields of Lord Muruga where he won over the Demons. This sacred shrine is built to offer worship to Lord Muruga. The temple mythology connects the existence of the temple with the Pranava mantra “OM”.

The important festivals celebrated with traditional rituals in this temple are monthly Kirutikai festival, Visakam festival in May, Navaratri festival, Tiru Karthikai festival in Nov/December, Temple Car festival in April, Skanda Shashti festival in October, Pankuni Uttiram festival in March and Taippucam festival in January.
