Vidyashankara Temple

, Sringeri

Vidyasankara temple dedicated to the pontiff Vidyashankara lived during 14th century CE. The temple is assumed to be established by Vidyaranya, a sage who was the patron of Harihara and Bukka, the founder brothers of Vijayanagara Kingdom.

The temple’s architectural style is a specimen of the excellence of South Indian and Vijayanagara architectural styles and designs. There are many inscriptions in this temple. These inscriptions display the contributions of various Vijayanagara emperors.

The main temple has 12 pillars, known as zodiac pillars, constructed based on the astronomical expertise at that period. These 12 pillars designate the 12 signs of zodiac.
