Located enroute Pahalgam, around 25 km from Srinagar is the temple ruins of Avantipur. The site is an archeological and historical delight for history buffs. The site comprises of two temples dating back to 9th century, standing just a kilometer apart. King Awantivarman, who ruled Kashmir during 9th century, built both the temples – Shiva Temple and Avantiswami Temple.

The Shiva Temple is renovated and in daily use, while Avantiswami Temple, which was dedicated to Lord Vishnu is now a ruin. Both the temples reflect Greek style of architecture. The British excavated the temples in 18th century taking away some of the idols to England while quite a few are on display at Sri Pratap Singh Museum in Srinagar.
