Situated in the Spiti between the towns of Kaza and Tabo, this monastery is a major attraction of Spiti valley. Set on a cliff, the monastery offers the amazing view of the Spiti River. The literal meaning of Dhankar is “fort on a cliff”. Earlier during 17th century, Dhankar was the traditional capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom, also having some features dating back to the 12th century.

Dhankar Monastery has a statue of “Vairocharan” displaying four complete Buddha’s figures seated back to back. Besides, the monastery also houses Buddhist scriptures, murals, paintings and sculptures. Approachable by motorable road especially small vehicles, it is a spot worth visiting in Spiti.
