Sikkim is a beautiful scenic location which proves to be a fantasy destination of many a tourist. The original inhabitants of Sikkim, the Lepchas called it Nye-mae-el or `paradise'. Sikkim is the second smallest state in India and is nestled in the Himalayas. Its natural features are dictated by the most magnificent mountain range in the world which includes the Khangchendzonga, the third highest mountain in the world.

It proves to be quite an attraction to tourists with its rich culture, picturesque beauty and bio-diversity. Tourists enjoy the various adventure sports and assortment of events and festivals. Nature lovers are besotted with the calm soothing surroundings characterized by the striking greenery. Sikkim has four districts, the west district, south district, north district and east district. These districts are further divided into sub districts. There are eight towns and nine subdivisions in Sikkim.

West district

Geyzing is the district capital for the west district. The west district is characterized by its lush landscape and beautiful scenery consisting of charming lakes and waterfalls. Trekking is popular activity in this part of Sikkim as terrain makes for great trekking routes. The west district of Sikkim is sated with history. The first chogyal or Dharma Raja of Sikkim was sanctified at Yuksum in the year 164. Also, some of the most sacred and imperative monasteries were set up here, like the Sanga Choling and Dubdi. These were the first monasteries to come up in the whole of Sikkim. The chief locations of this district includes Pelling, Pemayangtse Monastery, Khecheopalri Lake, Yuksam Tashiding, Reshi Hot Springs, Sanga Choeling Monastery and Rinchenpong.

East district

East district is the most inhabited district of Sikkim with Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim located there. Gangtok is a popular tourist spot and has not become a multi-ethnic and broad-based hub of Sikkim. Here you will find a traditional as well as modern age existing side by side. It is known for its beautiful Tsomgo (Changu) Lake and Menmecho Lake as well as the significant Nathula Pass. The other major attractions in the area are the Do-Drul Chorten (Stupa), Deer Park, Flower Show, Enchey Monastery, Ridge Park , White Hall, Tashi View Point, Hanuman Tok, Ganesh Tok and the Himalayan Zoological Park.

South district

The South district is the smallest of the districts of Sikkim. However, it offers a beautiful view of the mountain ranges that leaves one breathless. Its lovely villages and charming view of the high ranges of mountains makes it a favorite tourist destination. The various attractive destinations at south district are Ravangla, Temi Tea Garden, Sikip and Jorethang. Ravangla is where the annual Pang Lhabsol festival is held. Samdruptse Hill is near Namchi, which is where the statue of Guru Padmasambhava stands.

North District

The northern district of Sikkim could be called the most beautiful and scenic area. It provides an unforgettable experience to people who love nature. The scenery here can be described as truly exquisite. During spring, valleys filled with delicate flowers and lush meadows are a common sight. Here one can come into contact with the Sikkimese culture and heritage. The hot springs are a famous attraction here. The main destinations in this part of Sikkim include Yumthang Valley, Kabi Longtsok and the Phodong Monastery.
