For the lost souls, Sawantwadi is also one of the gateways to the ever alluring Goa.

Sawantwadi is besieged by verdant forests and hillocks from tri-directions and is blessed with the guarding presence of Arabian Sea from the fourth quarter. Bestowed by Mother Nature, Sawantwadi swanks of inimitable biodiversity, which nestles a wide variety of wildlife including leopards, bison, tiger, wild boar etc. The medicinal herbs and trees in the surrounding forests are refreshingly preserved and heartwarming. A popular market for the towns and villages in the vicinity trade flourishes in Coconut, Cashew nut, Areca nut, fish, and wonderfully crafted wooden articles.

The Sawant Bhonsale dynasty was instrumental in foreseeing and creating the township almost 300 years ago. Sawantwadi province, last ruled by King Shivaji Raje Bhonsale continued independently even after Independence of India for almost 8 years. The remarkable history of this town and the marks of olden times are visible in the form of the Great Royal Palace (18th century), Lester gate (late 19th century), Atmeshwar Tali (late 19th century), Kolgaon darwaja (200 years old) and Vithal Mandir.

The locale specializes in kalasutri, wood products, especially it’s wooden toys, bamboo and Pottery Art and traditional Art Paintings and chitrakathi. Ganifa Cards handmade from circular pieces of paper depicting miniature designs of 10 reincarnations of lord Vishnu are being created here since over 300 years. The game of Ganghifa (102 cards game) was designed, developed and spread by Sawantwadians. Shilpa Gram, the craft village, provides an ideal platform to local manufacturers to display their craft and wares to the tourists. Gandhiji was so impressed during one of his visits that he called Sawantwadi, the 'Ramrajya' (Utopia).
