Santiniketan, literally means abode of Peace and a place reverberating with the memory of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, is the embodiment of peace and tranquility and the world renowned Visva Bharathi University is located at this place. Here in this University and in Santhiniketan cultures of west and east meet together for common cause of World Peace and it attracts many talented students from all India and other foreign countries. It has the stature of a spiritual meeting place in a serene, artistic and culturally rich secluded environment.

Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, father of famous poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, established Santiniketan in 1862 AD mainly due to the attraction of the natural beauty and calmness of the locality, near the small town Bolpur in West Bengal. Maharshi Debendranath tagore formed a trust in 1863 for running the Santhiniketan. He entrusted the new trust with the task of arranging a fair, Paush Mela, with a primary aim of propagating a new religious faith known as Brahmo Dharmo. Presently the major celebration in Santhiniketan and a major attraction for tourists is this Paush Mela, conducted every year in December.

Rabindranath Tagore set up a school named Brahmacharya School in 1901 at Santhiniketan, presently this is known as Patha Bhavan. Annual Paush Utsav was made as a converging place for scholars, local people and urban people during his period. It is an event in which artisans display their artifacts and a fair in which all types of products are sold.

Santhiniketan has grown to a much sought tourist spot due to its incredible history and its association with Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore. The Scenic surroundings, the greatest knowledge base in India, the legendary history of the fairs and the mesmerizing natural charm, all attracts thousands of tourists every year to Santhiniketan.

There are many attractions in Santhiniketan; main attractions are the various bhavans (buildings) in the Visva-Bharati campus. These include Kala Bhavan (college of arts and crafts), China Bhavan (Chinese faculty), Sangeet Bhavan (school of dance and music), Patha Bhavan (the Brahmacharya School) and the prayer hall. A research Institute and a Museum are also located here.

Santiniketan has the added credit of being the home to the Amartya Sen, who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1998.
