Ayyappa temple is the prime attraction in Sabarimala. A temple dedicated to Malikapurathamma Devi is placed on the left side of the Ayyappa temple. It is believed that the temple layout was thought out by Lord Ayyappa himself. Lord Ayyappa also known as Manikantan is believed to be son of Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna in Mohini form.

Devotees have to climb 18 sacred steps to reach the sanctum sanctorum. Each step symbolic of different human characteristics - the first 5 steps representing the human senses, next 8 representing different human emotions, the following 3 steps represent human qualities & the last 2 steps leading up to the holy sanctorum are symbolic of knowledge & ignorance.

It is believed that as pilgrims ascend the 18 holy steps, their sins are forgiven & they are blessed by Lord Ayyappa. The temple is a present day example of religious tolerance & equality.

To climb up the 18 steps, worshipers bring with them what is called a Erumudikettu or Pallikettu(A two compartment bag made of handwoven cotton cloth which holds offerings for the lord) which is carried on their heads . All pilgrims wear black dresses while going to Sabarimala Ayyappa temple. Before the trek to the temple begins from the banks of River Pampa, one has to take a dip in the Pampa river.

The pilgrim season is from November to January. The temple is open for worship only during the days of Mandalapooja (approximately November 15 to December 26), Makaravilakku (January 14- "Makara Sankranti") and Vishu (April 14), and the first six days of each Malayalam month.

The temple premises offers panoramic views of the western ghats. The visit to this temple is really an experience to cleanse the body, mind & soul.
