Rumtek is a town located in the Indian state of Sikkim. This town is located near the state capital of Gangtok, and for this reason, Rumtek is very famous among tourists who frequently flock to this region. Rumtek is well known among tourists mainly because of the monastery that is located here. This monastery, also known as the Rumtek Monastery, is a very large structure and a very important one.

The monastery is located atop a hill, and at a distance of around twenty four kilometers from Gangtok. Many Buddhists pilgrims frequent this monastery and visiting the place during the peak season can provide you with some insights into the local Buddhist culture. Many ancient relics and a golden stupa are also present in this monastery, and you can see this during your trip to the place. You can also get some breathtaking views of Gangtok city from atop this hill.

During your trip to Rumtek, you can also visit Gangtok and visit Do Drul Chorten in this city. A revered holy site among Buddhists, this place is an important tourist attraction that you must visit. The white stupa located in this monastery is considered very holy. You can also visit 200 year old Enchey Monastery that lies near Gangtok.

Beautiful monastery above a Tibetan settlement. This monastery is the seat of the Karmapa Lama who heads the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. We loved sitting through the chants in the main prayer hall. Its a quiet village with good hiking destinations in the vicinity.
