Punjab is an Indian state located in the northwestern part of the country. It is bordered by the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and by that of Punjab, belonging to the Pakistani province. Chandigarh is the capital city of Punjab and the language spoken is Punjabi or Gurumukhi. Some major cities of Punjab are Jalandhar, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Patiala and Bathinda .

Punjabi is the only state in India with a majorly Sikh population. During the partition in 1947, Punjab was divided between Pakistan and India. The state has a wide range of industries and manufacturing units.

Some of the industries produce the state are electrical goods, fertilizers, bicycles, garments, machine tools, sewing machines, textiles, water meter, scientific instruments and more. A part of the state merges into the Thar Desert and the Shivalik Hills. The climate is generally along the extremes - too hot or too cold.

Punjab witnesses thousands of tourists each year. The state is embedded with scores of palaces, historic sites, battle grounds and great architectural marvels of the Sikhs. Some sites and ruins of Indus Valley Civilization can be found in Punjab. Chandigarh is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in India.

Monuments of splendid architecture can be found in the states of Chandigarh, Kaporthala and Patiala. The famous Golden Temple is located in the city of Amritsar and is said to witness more number of visitors than Taj Mahal. It holds a lot of significance and is one of the most respected places of worship for the Sikhs. Harmandir Sahib is considered to be one amongst the best spiritual places in the world.

The Wagah border between Pakistan and India is situated on the Grand Trunk Road. The ceremony of lowering of the flags every evening is watched by many spectators.

Ludhiana is a great place for shopping enthusiasts. The Qila Mubarak or the Patiala fort has many weapons and pieces of art on display. Sheesh Mahal and Sukhna Lake are some more attractions in the state.

Punjab and its culture are glorified in Indian movies. Punjabi weddings and dances are a delight to watch. The state is famous for its food and an array of cuisines and one can taste varieties of spicy vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.

How to Reach Punjab


By Air


The Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar is widely used among the six airports present in Punjab. It receives flights from Toronto, London, Dubai, Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Tashkent and Ashgabat. Tourists from other cities in Europe, USA or South East Asia can book a flight to the Indira Gandhi International Airport at Delhi.

By Trains


All the cities of India are connected to the railway stations in Punjab. The Amritsar railway station is the largest and connects all major cities. Kolkata, Varanasi and Lucknow have direct rail routes to the country.

By Road


NH1 connects Kolkata to Peshawar in Pakistan and passes through Pathankot, Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur in Punjab. It takes seven hours form Amritsar to get to Delhi and five hours from Chandigarh. Auto rickshaws, rickshaws and private cabs can be used by tourists to traverse within the state.
