Prakasam is a district that is located in the State of Andhra Pradesh. Ongole is the capital of the district and is the main city. The district has been ruled by many different rulers and they are many cultures and religions that can be found in the area. Some of the main cities and towns in the Prakasam District are Ongole, Addanki, Podili, Darsi, Markapur, Chirala and many others. Initially the region was ruled by the Satavahanas and they introduce Buddhism to the region. There are many influences of Buddhism that can be seen in the Praksam District. The region is very old and civilizations have been flourishing since the time of the Maurya Dynasty. Subsequently the district was ruled by the Vijayanagar Kings and they have left their traces in the region as well. Islam was introduced to the region by the Qutub Shahis who were later followed by the Mughal Kings.
The area is well known for its black granite and the Chimakurthy town produces some of the best granite in the country. There are many companies in the area that deal with granite. The district is easily accessible to most parts of the State and Ongole is the main transportation center.
