Virupaksha Temple

, Pattadakal

  (part of Badami region)

This 8th century temple is the biggest and grandest of all the temples located in Pattadakal. It was built by Queen Lokamahadevi to celebrate the victory of her husband, Vikramaditya II over the Pallavas of Kanchi. The temple is architecturally quite similar to that of the Kailasanathar Temple located at Kanchi. The pillars of the temple depict the events from puranas and marvelous carvings of Ravananugrahamurthy, Narasimha, Gajendramoksham and the dance of Shiva are worthy of admiration. The temple is one among the oldest existing in India and has the ancient idols and structures of Hindu Gods such as Nataraja, Lingodhbhava, Ravananugraha and Ugranarasimha.
