The Palamu district is a thinly populated part of the state of Jharkhand. The place is known for the Palamu National Park and the park is home to a small population of tigers. Some of the other animals that can be seen in the park are chintal, nilgai, Indian dogs, chinkara, langurs, gaur, hares, elephants, porcupines, leopards, wild boars, sloth bears and sambar deer. Some birds such as peafowl, partridges and jungle fowl can be seen here as well.

One can drive through the park using jeeps that can be hired from the forest department. Forest guides are also provided and they can take safely take you to see the animals in the park. There are a few tree houses that are located here as well and these are used for watching and spotting various animals. Food is also provided on request. There are a few watch towers present in the park and these are good vantage points from where you can watch the animals safely.

Palamu also has two forts that are situated inside the jungles and these are also popular tourist sites. They are known as the Naya Kila and the Purana Kila. The walls of these forts still bear cannon and bullet marks.

The district of Palamu experiences three main seasons and they are summer, winter and monsoon seasons. The conditions are largely extreme and they vary according to the seasons. Summers are generally hot and temperatures can be extreme during this period. The monsoon season brings some amount of rainfall to the region and visiting the place during this time might be difficult. Winters are cold and it is advisable to travel with protective clothing.

The summer season starts from the month of March and lasts till the end of May. Temperatures can climb up to a high of around 47 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Day temperatures rarely fall below the 30 degrees Celsius mark. Summer nights are much cooler.

The monsoon season starts from the month of June and extends till the end of September. One can expect the temperatures to be mild during this period. The post monsoon season is a popular tourist season and day temperatures range in the low thirties.

The winter season is during the months from December to February. During this time the mercury can fall to a low of 7 degrees Celsius. Conditions are pleasant during the day and this is also a good time to visit.
