The name Palampur is a derivative of the term Pulum, which means abundant water, a name that is aptly suited to the magnificent environ of numerous pour outs and torrents that interlaces the winding paths of the lush terrain of Palampur.

Formerly Palampur was part of the Sikh Kingdom of Jalandhara and it came to limelight only in the 19th century when the British noticed its aromatic freshness and salubrious climate. Travel within city

The town of Palampur is a magnificent location present in Northern India in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Travelling within Palampur is very easy, as there are a lot of travel options available for the same. The town of Palampur is a very well connected town that has constant bus services, ever ready auto rickshaws and also taxis that cater to tourists and visitors.


Buses are the preferred mode of travel anywhere in India, as buses are very cheap and economical, and ply to almost all the major parts in any particular city. The same is true with Palampur too, as the buses run by the state in Palampur cover every area of the city. Bus travel is relatively cheap and can cost you around Rs 3 to 10 depending on the distance covered.

Auto Rickshaw

You can also opt for auto rickshaws in the town of Palampur, and these auto rickshaws in Palampur do not run on meter. You will have to negotiate well before climbing into an auto rickshaw; by making sure that the driver agrees to a fixed amount as this can make your transport easier. Auto rickshaw fares may range from Rs 15 to 30, and there are no special night fares.


Taxis in the town of Palampur normally charge around Rs 13 per kilometer, and the minimum charge for taking a taxi is Rs 25.


Palampur is dotted by a few restaurants which remain open from 10 am till 10 pm. For quick bites like chats, pakoras and paranthas, tourists can head to Taj. For those interested in savouring Chinese, Indian and Continental cuisines can go to Hotel Surabhi serving mouth watering food. Hotel Sai Gardens is the only bar-cum restaurant in Palampur, serving special Pahari cuisine, Jain foods and vegetarian items.


While in Palampur, the aromatic Kangra tea is the most popular shopping item. There is no market place per say, but the streets are lined with shops selling Tibetan handicrafts, carpets, local handiwork and wooden souvenirs.


Bir & Billing – 30 km from Palampur, the town of Bir and Billing are also known as the ‘Paragliding Capital of India’. Bir serves as the take-off site while Billing, 14 km from Bir, is the landing site. Best time to enjoy paragliding here is from March to May and in October and November.
