At the foot hills of the Nubra Valley is the official residence of the Chief of Lamba of Nubra. Along with this stands the impressive 32 m Maitreya Buddha statue. Perched atop a hill, the status faces the Shyok river towards Pakistan.

The statue built very recently with the help of local donations & 8 kg of gold donated by the head of the Gelupa, Ganden Thipa (the reincarnation of Tsongkhapa) & Abott of Rizu Monastery.

Construction of the statue began in April 2006 & was consecrated recently by H.H Dalai Lama on 25th july 2010. It is said that the statue was built to protect the Diksit village, to prevent further war with Pakistan & to promote world peace.
