Navadvipa, literally means nine (nava) islands (dvip), is a town consisting of nine islands looking like an eight-petaled lotus flower. The Navadvipa town has a circumference of thirty miles. The islands are centered on Antardvipa (Mayapur). It is a part of Mayapur Township. Navadaipa form the centre of the Gaura Mandala region in West Bengal, near to Kolkata. Navadvipa is a famous temple town with about 185 temples in and around. It is a place where all beliefs, Shaiva, Vaishnava and Buddhist converge and exist in harmony.

The nine islands stand for the nine processes of devotional service. The islands are Antardvipa (Mayapur) for surrendering everything, Simantadvipa for patient hearing, Godrumadvipa for chanting, Madhyadvipa for perfect remembering, Koladvipa for serving the lotus feet, Ritudvipa for ideal worshipping, Jahnudvipa for praying unconditionally, Modadrumadvipa for serving as a servant and Rudradvipa for being a friend.

Navadvipa, also called as Nabadwip, was the erstwhile capital of Bengal during 12th century. Today it is renowned as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is revered by the Hindu devotees. The town is ideally located at a picturesque place at the convergence of the Bhagirathi and Jalangi Rivers. ISKON consider this area as a holy place. The region witnesses many activities undertaken by ISKON. Navadvipa is also popular as Audarya Dhama. Audarya means generosity and magnanimity.

The most impressive religious and tourist attraction in Navadvipa is the Shonar Gauranga, the temple dedicated to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu enshrining a golden statue of Sri Chaitanya. The center location of the Navadvipa islands is known as Yogapitha. It is the holy place where Lord Chaitanya took birth in the Earth. The entire Navadvipa region is an aesthetic and spiritual location and it is believed that Sri Gauranga performed the transcendental activities at this place.
