The astronomical observatory was established in Nainital in the year 1955. The observatory is currently located on Manora peak, about a km distance from Hanumangarthi by foot. A center for astronomical studies, artificial satellites can be tracked in the observatory.
One has to travel a short distance of 9 kms from Nainital to reach the Astronomical Observatory. The observatory was established with a view of conducting astrophysical research and developing facilities to continue the same. Research has been going on in stellar, solar and theoretical streams of astrophysics. With prior permission, visitors can get access to the observatory and also experience the pleasure of viewing celestial objects through the telescope, provided the nights are clear enough!

Naina Devi temple is situated on the northern end of the Naini Lake, formed after the eye of Goddess Sati fell on this part of land. The temple dates back to the ancient days of history when Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva burnt herself to death unable to bear the insult when her father King Daksha refused to invite Sati and Lord Shiva for a yajna. Devastated and grief-stricken, when Lord Shiva was returning to their abode with her body in his arms, her body parts fells on various spots on earth.
The red roofed Naina Devi temple is dedicated to this incident. Two eyes or Netras depicts the deity of the temple. Maa Naina Devi is accompanied with Lord Ganesha and Mata Kali in the temple.

For all the nature lovers and those interested in wildlife, a visit to the Govind Vallabh Pant Zoo at Nainital does not result in disappointment. This is a high altitude zoo situated at 2100 meters in a vast open area, about one km away from the bus stand. This Nainital zoo is a home to a variety of animals, namely, Himalayan black bear, Monkeys, Siberian Tiger, Leopard, Wolf, Palm civet cat, Rose ringed Parakeet, Silver Pheasants, Hill Fox, Ghoral, Sambhar and Barking Deer.
One can visit the zoo throughout the year, except when it is closed on the occasions of Holi, Diwali, and all national holidays in addition to the weekly off on Monday.

A ropeway or cable car ride is the best-known way to access the snow view point. Just as the name implies, one can view the snow laden Himalayas from this view point. At an altitude of 2270 m, the Snow View point is situated on top of the Sher-ka-danda ridge. At a distance of 2.5 kms from the town of Nainital, this is the most easily accessible hilltop.
During the months of October and November, a spectacular view of the snow bound mountains can be witnessed. Be prepared to capture the scenic beauty of India in your cameras. Tea, snacks and other refreshments are also available atop this hill in case you want to spend more time around.

Established in the ancient period of 1844, St John’s Church in the Wilderness is located on the northern end of Nainital, also referred to as Mallital. This church is situated close to the Naina Devi Temple.
The story as per the pages of history dates back to the year 1844 when the Bishop of Calcutta, Daniel Wilson, had come on a visit to lay the foundation of the church. Since he fell ill, he had to rest in an unfinished house near the forest. Thus the church was named as St. John in the Wilderness Church. This church is a memorial for the victims of the 1880 landslide; the names of the victims are inscribed on a brass plaque.
