Bhatkal, which was invaded by the Chola King during the 10th century, is the port town close to Murudeshwar, basic origin of the Nawayath Muslim community. Soloesvara Temple, one of the oldest temples in the region, was built in reminiscence of the invasion.

In Bhatkal, music and dance makes a part of life and receives equal importance as formal education. Most of the temples that could be seen today were built between 1543 and 1567 AD.

Bhatkal was an important seaport and therefore a great hub of commerce. Presently the entire town is in ruins except for some small temples properly covered with copper and stone.

Placed between the Arabian Sea and Saraswathy forest, Bhatkal is a cute calm and picturesque town unexplored by tourists. The present scenes in the varied architectural buildings are due to the usual travel of the locals to the Middle Eastern countries. This impact is visible in fancy bungalows and grand style Mosques, giving a pseudo Arabic outlook and culture.
