Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located 18 km from of Marayoor in the Idukki district of Kerala. It is a prominent reserve extending to an area of more than 90 sq km, and came to recognition as a world life sanctuary in 1984.
The sanctuary lies in the Western Ghats in the rain shadow region and receives only 48 days rain annually during the months of October and November, that too when the northeast monsoons have set.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to wildlife including giant grizzled squirrel, tigers, gaur, spotted deer, kraits, turtles, vipers, black eagles, cormorants, spectacled cobras, and many more species. The place is also an ideal for boating as well as trekking and has variety of trees.
