Also known as Nila, the Bharathappuzha River flowing along 209 km is the second longest river in Kerala. Along the course of this river are 11 reservoirs with the Malampuzha dam being the largest.

The Bharathapuzha River is the life line of several towns & villages along its course & is known by different names too. A number of famous Hindu temples like Thiruvilwamala Sree Rama Temple, Thirunavaya Navamukunda Temple, Chamravattam Ayyappa Temple and Panniyur Sree Varahamurthy temple are situated along the banks of the Bharathapuzha River.

Legend has it that those cremated on the banks of Bharathappuzha achieve salvation. Along the banks of this river, son's pay homage to their fathers by performing the "Pithru Tharpanam" ritual on the Karkidaka Vavu day.

All in all a river known for its multiple facets from scenic beauty, 11 reservoirs, its sacred waters & temples along its banks is the lifeline of the Malabar region of Kerala.
