Madhya Pradesh is an Indian state located in central India. Bhopal is its capital city and the language spoken is Hindi. The major cities in Madhya Pradesh are Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior. The state is the sixth largest in terms of population and second largest in terms of area. Madhya Pradesh is also known as the “Heart of India”, as it lies in the centre of the country.

Madhya Pradesh attained statehood on the 1st of November 1965; the state was later divided in two different provinces in 2000. It is rich in terms of heritage and has historical and mythological relevance. Many cities in the state have traces of history from the Mauryan dynasty to the Satavahana dynasty and the Gupta dynasty. The state has rock paintings which date back to the Stone Age. Madhya Pradesh also finds a mention in the Hindu mythological epic, the Ramayana.

Madhya Pradesh is blessed with rich flora and fauna and the national parks in the state include the Bandhavgarh National Park, Kanha National Park, Pench National Park, Panna National Park and the Satpura National Park.

The state is home to the Bhimbetka rock shelters. This site is listed under the UNESCO World Heritage sites. The rock shelters have some paintings, which are reported to be at least 30,000 years old; it is located in the district of Raisen.

The famous Khajuraho temples are also located in Madhya Pradesh. The temples are situated on the Vindhya mountain range and are famous for their erotic and beautiful rock carvings. Khajuraho temples lie in the district of Chhatarpur, in the Bundelkhand region.

Ujjain is an ancient city located in Madhya Pradesh. The city is dotted with ancient heritage temples and also finds a mention in the Hindu mythology epic, Mahabharata. The famous Kumbh Mela is held at Ujjain.

Exploring the culture of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh has numerous monuments ranging back to the historic era. The state is known for its architectural marvels and rich biodiversity. Hindustani music is popular in the state and belongs to the Gharana system. A Gharana is a musicological ideology that and differs from one gharana to another. The state plays an integral role in the Indian Classical music scenario.

One of the oldest Gharanas in the state is the Gwalior Gharana. It was founded during the Mughal era under the rule of Emperor Akbar. Gwalior gharana boasts of some legendary singers like Tansen. Each year, a Tansen festival is organized at his tomb in Gwalior.

Dhrupad is a genre belonging to the Hindustani classical music, which was patronized by Raja Man Singh Tomar. Dhruvapada is one of the oldest musical genres in the Indian classical music scene.

Some of the traditional games played in the rural Madhya Pradesh are Gulli Danda, Kho Kho and Pittu. Many languages, other the Hindi are spoken in the state viz. Malvi, Nimadi, Bagheli and Bundeli.

Facts for tourists

To prevent unprecedented risk, women should avoid wearing revealing clothes. Madhya Pradesh is a very humid state and hence consuming a lot of fluids is advised. Use of drugs is prohibited in the state.
