Spituk Monastery, established in the 11th century, was named by a scholarly translator Rinchen Zangpo as Spituk. Located about 8 km from Leh on the shore of Indus River (reachable by jeeps or taxis), the Monastery is famous for its wide and varied collections of ancient masks, icons, antique arms and numerous Thangkas.

Spituk Gustor, the annual festival which is celebrated in grandeur draws many tourists at this place. One nearby attraction worth visiting is the Mahakal Temple.
